Mary Tudor's Dress Stock by MirandaRose-Stock Mary Tudor's Dress Stock by MirandaRose-Stock
Now this was a display in a castle that I visited so I hope it is OK to use for stock. I don't know whether things like this have copyright??? But I thought it would be a great dress to use in a manip if you were able to add a head and hands to it - ha ha! Like I said...not sure about the copyright thing...but as long as it is just used in DA I'm sure it will be OK.

My stock rules can be found in my journal, thanks! :)

Well, folks, Carolly Erickson and myself were wrong about this dress. According to a new biography of Queen Mary I, this is a reproduction of the actual wedding gown that she wore on July 25, 1554 when she married Prince Philip of Spain. It seems the actual paperwork dating back to prior to the wedding was recently discovered, and it stated that the gown was as you see in the photo: Purple (Mary apparently loved that color) patterned with gold, with a white satin kirtle with gold patterning on it as well.

I guess that's the good thing about on-going historical research. It eventually helps fill in the blanks left by contemporary eyewitnesses. But it doesn't take away from my affection for Carolly Erickson. That's just so you know. :)

Yes, this definitely looks like something Queen Mary I of England (1516-1558) would have worn during the last five years of her life. The winged collar on the dress is what tells me it's from that period.

Thanks, hun! I enlarged the picture and was able to read the sign posted near the dress. As far as I could make out, the sign said the dress was a reproduction of the one that Queen Mary I wore when she married Prince Phillip of Spain, son of Charles V the Holy Roman Emperor, in July of 1554.

But I encountered a little mystery here as well. I have a number of books on Tudor rulers, among them three on Queen Mary I herself. I was going through one of them to look for the date of her wedding to Phillip of Spain when I found the comment that Mary's wedding gown had been made of black velvet and studded with diamonds. And this is not criticism of MirandaRose's photo of the purple-and-gold dress; like I said, the gown is clearly something that Mary would have worn during her five-year reign. But I wonder if somebody at the castle that MirandaRose visited either didn't know anything about Mary Tudor's wedding dress, mistakenly identified this as her wedding dress, or has tried to pull the wool over the visitors' eyes by saying it was Mary's wedding dress.

Oh, I won't take it down - it's the castle's mistake! ;) :D
But thanks for the info - always interesting to hear! :)

Thanks, hun. The book I got the information out of is "Bloody Mary" by Carolly Erickson. It's a well-written book that's been well researched and has a ton of information on Mary Tudor (Queen Mary I of England). Check it out if you ever get the chance.

great gown! I'm a Tudor fanatic, and I Love studying Tudor Dress! I think this is during the last years of Henry VIII's reign, so this is probably the dress of Mary Tudor, his daughter with Katherine of Aragon rather than Mary Tudor, his sister.

and it's probably a reproduction. But I would love to just touch one. Wow.

I LOVE MARY TUDOR!

Poor mary. Life sucked for her.

I saw her throne at a exhibit for her in Westminster back in 2004. Amazing.

This is the actual dress?
